HiddenChamp: KWS – Seeding the future

Our team visited the 4th largest seed producer KWS at their headquarters in Berlin. They offer a variety of different job opportunities - not only in R&D.

Business

Seed production in the core segments corn, sugarbeet, and cereals. In addition, KWS is building a new business unit for vegetable seeds.

Under the guiding motto “Urbanity meets agriculture” KWS created a modern working environment with different colours marking the office floors, each symbolising one of their products. The highlight: Definitely the rooftop terrace (!) with a fantastic 360 degree view of Berlin.

So what does a seed producer actually do? Well, they run breeding programs and try to improve the genetic potential of plants through research. They’ve been doing that for a while and see themselves as partners of farmers worldwide.

Their mission: Providing an immense contribution to nutrition solutions for a steadily growing world population.

In the 20/21 financial year KWS invested 252 Mio. € in research and development –  which is about 20% of the annual turnover.

Research

Plant breeding for sustainable agriculture requires continuous and intense research activities.

Dr. Beate Rother shares her career journey which started with her PhD in Microbiology. She is now Manager of Business Functions & Communication at the Research & Development department.
