Up to €1.25 million in funding over five years: The NRW Returning Scholars Program enables researchers abroad to establish their own junior research group at a university in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Germany. Apply by 9 January 2026!

Applications are welcome from a broad range of fields, including Medicine, Cell Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Virology, Ecology, Neurobiology, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Sciences, Bioenergy, Bioeconomy, Biodiversity, and Ecosystem Research. Other related areas may also apply if the project can clearly be placed within Life Sciences.

Who is eligible?

  • PhD completed 2 – 6 years ago (9 years for medical fields)
  • At least 12 months of research experience outside Germany
  • Previous residence in Germany before going abroad (German citizenship not required)

About the program

Since 2007, the Ministry of Culture and Science of NRW has supported the return of outstanding young scientists. Around 65 researchers have already received funding through the program and many now hold professorships in NRW. With more than 70 universities and over 50 non-university research institutions, NRW is the largest science hub in the heart of Europe.
